Following a skin examination, your practitioner may recommend a skin biopsy or excision to further assess or treat a suspicious lesion. These minor medical procedures allow for the accurate diagnosis and management of certain skin conditions, including abnormal moles, precancerous lesions, and suspected skin cancers.
A skin biopsy involves removing a small sample of skin tissue so it can be examined under a microscope by a pathology laboratory. This helps confirm a diagnosis and determine the most appropriate treatment if required.
A skin excision is a procedure where the entire lesion or abnormal area of skin is carefully removed under local anaesthetic. This may be recommended when a lesion requires complete removal for treatment or further analysis.
These procedures are typically performed in-clinic using local anaesthesia to ensure patient comfort. After the procedure, your practitioner will provide detailed aftercare instructions to support healing and minimise scarring. If pathology testing is required, results will be reviewed with you and any further management will be discussed.
At Bendigo Medispa, all biopsies and excisions are performed by a medically qualified practitioner, ensuring a safe, careful, and clinically guided approach to your skin health.

Both procedures are performed using local anaesthetic, which numbs the area before the treatment begins. Most patients feel little to no pain during the procedure itself. After the anaesthetic wears off, mild tenderness or discomfort may occur for a short period, which can usually be managed with simple care and over-the-counter pain relief if needed.
Any procedure that removes skin can leave a small scar. However, biopsies and excisions are performed using careful techniques designed to minimise scarring and support good cosmetic healing. Your practitioner will provide aftercare instructions to help the area heal as smoothly as possible.
If a biopsy sample is sent to a pathology laboratory for analysis, results are typically available within one to two weeks. Once the report is received, your practitioner will discuss the findings with you and explain whether any further treatment or monitoring is recommended.
